Micro irrigation techniques can be
used to improve irrigation efficiency in botanical gardens by reducing soil
evaporation and loss of drainage and creating and maintaining soil moisture
conditions that are conducive to crop growth. Countries water balance
experiments have shown that more than 50% of the surface water used in
conventional irrigation can be lost due to soil evaporation. This result gives
an indication of the potential improvement in irrigation efficiency that can be
achieved by adopting irrigation methods that reduce soil evaporation while
minimizing drainage and drainage losses.
Micro-irrigation techniques evaluated included low-drip irrigation, irrigation, and sub-surface irrigation using clay pipes. Among these methods, underground irrigation using clay pipes was found to be particularly effective in improving crops, crop quality and water efficiency, as well as being cheap, simple and easy to use. The relative advantages of underground irrigation have been maintained for a range of crops grown under different climatic conditions. Good results were obtained with underground irrigation when irrigation was used using poor quality irrigation water.
